On my journey as an aspiring astronaut, I have had a lot of physical training: pilot training, scuba training, survival training… But there is great importance in training your mind. This can be done through reading and exposing yourself with other perspectives.

Oftentimes, I find myself becoming inspired and wanting to take action after reading a good book. Here is a list of books that may inspire you to pursue your own dreams in 2022.

Book #1: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is based on ancient Toltec practices. Without going into too much detail on the specific agreements, these agreements will truly be life changing if put them into practice.

This is quite an inspiring book; not only for aspiring astronauts, but for anyone who is looking for personal growth. It delves into the practice of freeing yourself from meaningless suffering and getting closer to one’s true self.

Book #2: Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth

While many think gifts are innate, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance  by Angela Duckworth argues the opposite. Those who end up becoming more successful are all about the importance of trying your best.

Angela Duckworth has also given a Ted Talk on the topic of the Importance of perseverance and passion. This is something that has really stuck with me.

Amazon Book Description:  “The daughter of a scientist who frequently noted her lack of “genius,” Angela Duckworth is now a celebrated researcher and professor. It was her early eye-opening stints in teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience that led to her hypothesis about what really drives success: not genius, but a unique combination of passion and long-term perseverance.”

Book #3: An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth: What Going to Space Taught Me About Ingenuity, Determination, and Being Prepared for Anything by Chris Hadfield

Former astronaut, Colonel Chris Hadfield is an admirable figure for me. As an aspiring astronaut myself, I value the advice he has given in this book. I am inspired by his reserve while being in extreme situations and his willingness to always find a solution to any problem.

Amazon Book Description: “Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4000 hours in space. During this time he has broken into a Space Station with a Swiss army knife, disposed of a live snake while piloting a plane, and been temporarily blinded while clinging to the exterior of an orbiting spacecraft. The secret to Col. Hadfield’s success-and survival-is an unconventional philosophy he learned at NASA: prepare for the worst- and enjoy every moment of it.”
